Nordita officially opens in Stockholm

Stockholms universitet

Since January 1, 2007, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita) is officially located at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm.

Nordita is an independent Nordic institute for theoretical physics, partly financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Research is carried out in several fields, including astrophysics, biological physics as well as high energy and nuclear physics. At AlbaNova, Nordita has already started up a lively seminar activity in astrobiology and other fields. In addition to having a strong visitors program, Nordita continues to recruit new post-docs and assistant professors. The successful applicants for these jobs are expected to take up their positions by September. Nordita will also host a series of up to 5 scientific programs per year. These programs will bring world expertise to Stockholm for periods between one and two months.

In connection to the relocation of Nordita, Axel Brandenburg was appointed professor at Stockholm Observatory. He defended his thesis "Challenges for solar dynamo theory: α-effect, differential rotation and stability " in 1990 at the University of Helsinki. His main research interests are solar physics, with emphasis on dynamo theory and turbulence theory as well as astrobiology, with emphasis on homochirality. Since January 2000, Axel Brandenburg has been a Professor of Astrophysics at Nordita.
