How to get to Visby
To get to Visby you can either take the boats from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn or fly from Stockholm (Arlanda or Bromma airport) to Visby airport. More travel information is also available on the webpage of the Gotland tourist information.
By boat:
From Stockholm the closest ferry connection goes from Nynäshamn to Visby. In that season the boats go twice per day (three times on Monday and Friday). To be on time for the start of the conference the latest boat you will have to take leaves from Nynäshamn on Monday evening at 21:05, arriving in Visby at 00:20. If you prefer an earlier option there are boats leaving at 9:00 and 11:05 (arriving 12:20 and 14:25). For more details please check the timetables. After the conference there are options are to leave on Friday at 16:00 (we want to keep the schedule such that you can make that boat) or on Saturday morning at 7:05. The ferry tickets for adults cost of the order 150-200 SEK per trip (depending on your seat choice etc.). There is also a discount for students with ID. You also take a car on the ferry if you wish to drive there. Please check the web page for details.
Even though May is not yet the high season it might be a good idea to book the ferry tickets in advance either online on the ferry webpage or via phone (+46 771 22 33 00, Sun-Fri 8am-7pm, Sat 8am-6pm).
The most convenient way to get to Nynäshamn from Stockholm is either to take the shuttle bus from the bus station (Cityterminalen) at the Stockholm main station or the regular commuter trains (Pendeltåg).
The bus schedule is synchronized with the ferries and buses leave Stockholm 1h 45min before the ferry departure, and return to Stockholm directly after the ferry arrival. The bus departure and arrival times are also listed in the ferry timetables. The bus ticket costs 90 SEK per trip and can be purchased at one of the Flygbussarna ticket machines at the Cityterminalen bus station and on the ferry (tickets purchased on the bus are 30 SEK more). The trains (Pendeltåg J35, direction Nynäshamn) leave from the main station every 30 minutes and take about one hour to Nynäshamn Station. (You may have to switch trains at Västerhaninge, with a 5 min connection time.) From the train station it is a 500m walk to the ferry terminal. The time tables of the trains can be found on the Stockholm local traffic web page. The tickets cost 60 SEK (3 zones) and can be purchased at the ticket vending machines at the train station (some of them only take credit cards).
If you arrive by plane to Stockholm Arlanda, you can take the Arlanda Express train (20 min) or the Airport bus (~45 min but cheaper) to Stockholm main station. You may also want to check the possibility to continue by plane from Arlanda directly to Visby (see below).
An alternative ferry line to Visby leaves from Oskarshamn. Coming from direction Malmö or Copenhagen there might be a reasonable train connection to Oskarshamn (going via Kalmar). If you consider this option please check the train connections at www.SJ.se.
The Visby HamnHotell is located directly opposite the ferry terminal.
If you plan to arrive with your own boat please inquire with the Visby guest harbour for details. The guest harbour is located very close to the conference site (57°38,0 N 18°16,0 E).
By plane:
Flights to Visby are provided by SAS, Skyways and SverigeFlyg / GotlandsFlyg. Most flights go via Stockholm, either Arlanda or Bromma airport. The flight from Stockholm takes about 40 min and flights go several times a day. GotlandsFlyg also offers service from Göteborg and the "Stockholm" Skavsta Airport which is served by RyanAir (however, this connection seems to exist only on Sundays). Please check the web pages of the airlines for more details. (There are connections to other locations offered such as Oslo, Helsingborg, Berlin and Helsinki, but they are served only during the summer.) If you come from other locations than Stockholm you can probably book your entire journey through other travel agencies as well.
From Visby airport it is 5km to the city center of Visby and you will need to take a Taxi because buses are only offered during the summer.
