Very young supernovae

Since April 1, 2000, I have been the PI of a project using the ESO/VLT/UVES echelle to study the early emission from nearby supernovae We target both types of supernova, i.e., thermonuclear and core-collapse, although for slightly different reasons. You can read more about the project and our findings here. The first paper of this project can be retrieved from here. Our goal is to study and put limits on the amounts of circumstellar matter around the supernovae. A spin-off is the study of interstellar absorption from atoms, ions and complex molecules. The supernovae we have studied so far are SN 2000cx (Type Ia), SN 2001el (Type Ia, identified by us), SN 2001ig (Type Ib/c), and SN 2003bg (Type Ic).
