PoGO receives funding

Stockholms universitet

The balloon experiment PoGO has received a grant of several million SEK from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. A collaboration between the high-energy astrophysics group at the Department of Astronomy and the experimental particle physics group at KTH is behind the application.

The PoGO (Polarized Gamma-ray Observer) project is an international collaboration with members in Sweden, the United States, France and Japan. The experiment will measure the polarization from X-/gamma-ray sources, and is expected to provide important clues to the physical processes occuring in such objects as magnetized neutron stars and black holes. The first flight is expected to take place in the fall of 2008.
