Göran Scharmer receives honorary doctorate

The Swedish solar reseracher Göran Scharmer has been awarded an honorary doctorate at Uppsala University. He is one of five new recipients of the honorary degree at the faculty of Science and Technology. Read the press release here (in Swedish).

Göran Scharmer is a professor at the Institute for Solar Physics, an independent institute of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, tied to Stockholm University through the department of Astronomy. The institute also runs a research station on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This is the site for the Swedish 1-m solar telescope, used to take the sharpest images ever of the solar surface. For his leading role in the development of the telescope and the resulting images, Göran Scharmer received the Lennart Nilsson-award in 2004.

The award ceremony will take place on January 27, 2006.
