Hi Morten:
I don't have access to NY Times, but one can read about the discovery on
the "Länk till Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia" - Latest News: 31
March, Direct Detection by imaging of a young few Mj companion to GQ
Lup - preprint, or ESO Press Release
Spectral lines in the companion are seen emanating from Water (H2O),
Neutral Sodium (Na I), and Carbon Monoxide (CO). Comparison with models
cannot tell anything about the "surface". If it is a planet, which is
not 100% certain, it is still a giant GAS planet.
Cheers,
Aage.

Interesting article on the discovery of a new Exoplanet.
What does the atmosphere data reveal about the chemistry of its surface and source origin ?
