### Probing Early Galaxy Formation With Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ Absorbers
For my Master thesis, I performed a spectroscopic analysis of Lyman $\alpha$ and metal absorption lines of a $z\approx 2$ Damped Lyman Alpha absorber system in the background spectrum of a $z\approx 3$ quasar. This analysis led to an estimate of metallicity and internal kinematic properties of the system, and a comparison to other objects of the same type. It was the hope to also find weak Ly$\alpha$ emission from the DLA host galaxy in the bottom of the absorption trough, but no such emission was detected.
